I studied Linguistics (it’s a graduate school thing) and was briefly drawn to it for its sheer complexity. Unfortunately, my simple mind could not keep up plus na-brain freeze ako sa kalagitnaan ng pag-iintindi sa mga konsepto. Buti nga walang nose bleeding, eh.
Questions
Can anyone tell me what are the underlying universals in this linguistic form?
How does all the fields of linguistic come to play in this song?
What theoretical occurrence can be predicted from this as derived from an emerging framework?

Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It endeavours to answer the question–what is language and how is represented in the mind? Linguists focus on describing and explaining language and are not concerned with the prescriptive rules of the language (ie., do not split infinitives).
The underlying goal of the linguist is to try to discover the universals concerning language. That is, what are the common elements of all languages. The linguist then tries to place these elements in a theoretical framework that will describe all languages and also predict what can not occur in a language.
My college classmates were passing this video around cyberspace and I have got to pass it around, too.
Many are saying that English is a strange language. But for many, the language is their ticket to fame. In my recent post, I mentioned that the average Filipino student will have been exposed to the English language and its technicalities for 10 years. We are lucky to have an L3 (3rd Language). Because of their skill in understanding English they have developed their own language.
If we would like to intellectualize this the concept would be derived from Communicative Competence.
Communicative Competence is a concept introduced by Dell Hymes and discussed and redefined by many authors. Hymes’ original idea was that speakers of a language have to have more than grammatical competence in order to be able communicate effectively in a language; they also need to know how language is used by members of a speech community to accomplish their purposes. Of course, the grammar were way off but they did accomplish their purpose. They’re in YouTube and are stars - in their own right.
Filipinos can pride themselves to over-learning the English language. Exposure to the language started in the first grade and ends about the third year of college, depending on what course one is taking. The average Filipino student will be taught, repeatedly, the art of communicating in English for 12 years. So why are we so messed up linguistically?
Proof?
PS - Since this guy was on drugs, he doesn’t count but I just wanted to put it in. It’s funny.
Bakersfield, CA-Today is the first day of spring but yesterday families celebrated the last day of winter by going to parks and holding picnics. My daughter and I went to Park at the River Walk for our a short walk and bike ride. The weather was perfect for a family stroll, bike rides and wading in the stream. A few families were swimming in the lake, too. Well, yeah, doesn’t look much like winter but it is the last day of the season. Welcome Spring!
March 18, 2008 - The Tanicala and Alimbuyao family from Midland, Texas dropped by for a visit. They visited Teng’s work place and met other pinoys there.
You could not find a more hysterically dedicated bunch of fanatics of Manny Pacquiao than these nurses here in Bakersfield, CA!
Like every other Filipino in the USA, a boxing party was put together to witness the new national hero clinch yet another title. All, of course, were for the Pacman and their expectation were high. During that twelve intense, breath-taking , jaw-breaking, brow-busting, heart-pumping, breath taking , gory and bloody and edge-of-your-seat bouts, the fans had it all set out- the screams, cheers, jeers and the occasional hearty-cursing was the added excitement of the fight.
The actual battle was exciting and all but to see and hear the passion and the excitement come together was just contagious! Did I mention that these are nurses!
We join the Filipinos all around the world in celebrating another victory! See the videos here.
P.S.
Considering they are nurses, they still were grossed out with the big gash on Marquez’ eye.
The images are far from the glitz and glamor of the modeling world - it looks more like scenes from the holocaust only more classy. The photos are shocking. But I know this is not new.
A post from F-word.org talks about a New York legislation called Res. 0692-2007, which urges sponsors of the New York Fashion Week to adopt a healthy models education campaign and ban models with a BMI of less than 18.5 from strutting the runway. This is highlighted because of a death of a model due to an eating disorder. She is just one of many models who have died. Here’s the news article. So sad to see these beautiful women wither away like that. Visit this site and learn more about the subject or go to Eating Disorder and be educated.
It’s all over the news. The fall from grace of Eliot Spitzer resulted in his resignation as New York’s Governor. Apart from the politics of it all is the matter of pricing for a sexual fantasy delivered by a call girl with a hefty price tag. Harold Meyer of the Washington Post commented:
I’ve given serious thought to this over the past day, and I’m not sure that I’ve even had a sexual fantasy that, if actualized, would be worth $5,500 an hour.
What is the difference between a cheap prostitute and an expensive one is still baffling me - how do they actualize the service? I find this rather amusing but then again it is a sad commentary on the moral affairs of the times.
In the Philippines the cheapest prostitute can be had for the price of a bottle of beer and a few sticks of cigarette about Ps. 50.00. But an article from Mabuhay Radio mentions the pricing for local “magdalenas”:
From what I gathered, the usual rate for a decent-looking young Filipino woman is P1,500 per night or US$30 (roughly @ $1/P50). Rates can go up to $100 (P5,000) per night for the better-looking and younger call girls. Another DOM said that for $300 (P15,000) or less, one can have the short-time company of a movie starlet. And indeed, the rates in Metro Manila are way below those charged by brothels in Nevada and other sin cities in the United States, as one Fil-Am retiree explained to his buddies. And more often than not, the rate for a Filipino call girl is per night for unlimited action. The rates are much lower in the Philippine provinces, although often times the girls are supposed to be younger.
But at the end of the day, Spritzer did the right thing and stepped down from office. At least I can say that he rose to the occasion by apologizing and taking responsibility for his actions. But sadly enough, this does not hold true for some politicians in the Philippines.
What is Web 2.0? It’s the buzz and I read about it but I still have to understand the core idea. Well, I found a lecturette and it has given me a clear picture of what this new technology is all about.
